Storing files on an external drive is fine if you are after addition storage space however if you intend it to be a continuously on-line volume and don't require portability then I'd suggest that you have another drive added to the computer internally. It's difficult to compare storing files on optical media vs hard drive. Hard drives are easy and efficient when used as on-line storage (internal or external) however consumer optical technology is relatively poor in this regard (slow and re-writable media is less stable than write once media). Again hard drives can be used as an archive media but optical media is far more suitable.
