Shel, the buttons on the D, and I assume the DS, are identical in construction to many of the switches on the equipment I work on. I have often found that when the boards containing these switches are manufactured that a small amount of either adhesive or solder flux gets into the switch and makes it finicky. The "fix" for this is frequently working the switch a few dozen times quickly with a good bit more pressure than you would usually use. If all else fails perhaps you'd want to try this before returning the camera. I've had it fix many a keyboard with a couple of finicky keys. Make sure you don't have a brain damaged memory card first though.
