Shel, the buttons on the D, and I assume the DS, are identical in
construction to many of the switches on the equipment I work on.
I have often found that when the boards containing these switches are
manufactured that a small amount of either adhesive or solder flux
gets into the switch and makes it finicky.
The "fix" for this is frequently working the switch a few dozen times
quickly with a good bit more pressure than you would usually use.
If all else fails perhaps you'd want to try this before returning the
camera.
I've had it fix many a keyboard with a couple of finicky keys.
Make sure you don't have a brain damaged memory card first though.
