I would still try a set of fresh lithium batteries. The camera
responded to taking the batteries out. The charger gives you a voltage
reading, but it can't determine how fast those batteries might
discharge or how unevenly they might discharge. I would never commit to
repairs without trying new batteries.

I think (because of what Tom and several others have said) I'm going
