I would still try a set of fresh lithium batteries. The camera responded to taking the batteries out. The charger gives you a voltage reading, but it can't determine how fast those batteries might discharge or how unevenly they might discharge. I would never commit to repairs without trying new batteries.

hi Paul,

The 2300 mAh nimhs are new as of this year, as is the charger, a La
Crosse that charges each battery by itself and gives me a measurement
on voltage and mAh. I spent all of last year with duracell lithiums.

I think (because of what Tom and several others have said) I'm going
to re-word my issue and add the two other instances of stuck-shutter I
had last May, in order to re-direct them from simply checking on
humidity-related issues.

What kind of batteries are you using? Might you have a set of
rechargables that no longer want to hold a charge? Sounds like a
voltage problem to me. If you're using nimh batteries, try a set of
lithiums.
