I think the battery pack/vertical release is an essential item and never used the D without it. I like being able to rotate to a vertical orientation and use the vertical release (with associated wheelie thingies). After years of not having it on my LX, MX, SuperProgram, etc. I can't live without it now. If the D's successor does not have provision for battery grip/vertical release you'd never be able to call it "improved" :-)
As an aside, I was showing my istD to a Nikon slut, he was really impressed with the vertical release. Apparently, this is something Nikon doesn't offer on whichever DSLR he is using.
D70/D50... At least Canon was smart enough to offer the battery grip to it's "low-end" digi rebel bodies.
