This is how things have been done since I have been in the business.
I've even written a lot of those press releases.
You want to create a buzz about your product while it is still
vaporware. This gets you feedback full of information no paid
consultant could give you. You want to tease just enough to keep
people from buying your competitor's product while waiting for
yours. You reveal just little bits of skin here and there, but keep
the "goodies" covered up until the product is finally ready.
The truth is that if you just throw everything out there in the open
in one act, people realize that it really wasn't very interesting or
exciting.
