Hi Ann,

If I remember correctly, Mike Johnston had a post on this very topic quite
some time ago.  I believe he even mentioned that the term was first used in
a photo mag where he was working?  It's a transliteration of a Japanese
term, bo-ke -- refers to the way in which the out-of-focus parts of the
image are rendered.  For example, a particular conventional lens with lots
of aperture blades might have a pleasing bokeh because out-of-focus points
of light are rendered very nearly as blurry circles, whereas another lens
with fewer blades might have a less pleasing bokeh because out-of-focus
points of light are rendered as fuzzy hexagons.  Hope that helps, and I hope
I remembered the explanation correctly.
