That's not my experience, Thibouille. With any pre-A lens, the DS will do ONLY full output, unmetered flash with the built-in flash. Unless it does P-TTL in Av mode at wide-open aperture? I've never even tried that .. It certainly won't do it in Manual exposure mode.
But yes: dedicated external flash units can do TTL with those lenses.
