You don't have to perform the file download from card to computer  
using LR or PSE, all you have to do is organize your file system and  
download to the appropriate directories.

Using Lightroom's facilities to do the downloading does have its  
other benefits ... I have LR automatically assign IPTC metdata  
(creator name/address/contact info/copyright) and some basic keywords  
for the particular event to all files when I download, also perform  
DNG conversion on the fly and split a second backup copy of the  
original files to an external archive. Sometimes I have it apply a  
Develop preset as well. It can save a good bit of time later.
