Yeah, I store stuff primarily by Year and Event. So I've got
directories like

2006
    ARRC
    ATL-SCCA Christmas Party
    Mitty
    Petit le Mans
    ...
2007
    ARRC
    ATL-SCCA Christmas Party
    Mitty
    Petit le Mans
    ...

Camera and lens data lives in the EXIF stored within the PEFs. With a
little shell scripting magic and hand waving, it can be extracted and
queried at will. In general, though, I don't much care after the
initial analysis. I might check photos for body and lens during the
original classification and culling, if I suspect an equipment problem.

After that, "no one" will ever ask me to pull all the photos from a
specific body or shot with a specific lens. "Everybody" will ask me for
shots from the 2006 ARRC or the 2007 Mitty or something like that.

I also have a "grab bag" folder for each year that has more thematic
arrangement. So the grab bag folder for a year might have subfolders
like cats, landscape, ... Those are much more problematic due to the
varied things I might be looking for when searching them.

If I was hosting the image archive on a Unix-like OS, I could use soft
links to create a sort of keyword system hosted within the file system.
