Fred, It sounds like the signal doesn't conduct properly through the TC. It could be a loose fit (as is the case for one of my lenses...), it could be just dirty contact points, or it could be something more seriously wrong inside the TC...
Have you tried cleaning the contacts on all the bayonet surfaces?
