Thanks for the responses. My mistake about the LX - I thought it supported 'A' lenses.
Jostein - I've tried cleaning the contacts but without success. Paul - According to an online copy of the manual at http://www.pentax-manuals.com/manuals/accessories/accessmanuals.htm the 1.4X-L is compatible with the Pentax-A 400mm F5.6. Does the 2X-S have ball bearing contacts on both sides, or only on the 'lens' side like the 1.4X-L ?? I think the problem is that the '*' pin on the K10D mount is recessed, and the contact on the TC is also recessed so there's no physical, and therefore no electrical, contact being made.
