Doubt things have changed all that much.

I don't think the per-capita death rate from traffic accidents is really
the interesting number.  The interesting number is fatalities per km,
or, hopefully, something like fatalities per 100,000 km, because that
can be turned into "how long do I have to drive in this place before I
have a 50% chance of dying?"

Kinda like how one would want to know if a fellow photographer's 3
gorgeous displayed prints were taking from a group of 26 shots or 3,000
shots, only hopefully that's a situation involving rather less death.
