and mine experience are indicative of a some kind of general trend in
Epson support...

It's not just Epson. No one provides support any more.

They've all gone to those Voice Response Unit Hell systems, and if you ever do finally manage to talk to a person, that person doesn't actually know anything about the product.

He/she has a script and if your problem doesn't follow the script you're out of luck.
