I've given up on NiMH AA rechargeables in my *istD and gone back to
lithiums.

i've had great results with good quality (~2500mAh) NiMH batteries in my K200d, though i never shoot with flash; i keep a set of Sanyo eneloops as spares because while they have a lower total charge they keep their charge for weeks; i've gone on several multi-day trips and taken hundreds of photos, and only once (on a 9 day trip when i took over 900 photos, and didn't pre-charge one of the sets) did i have to buy some alkalines

i use a quality charger (LaCrosse BC-900, hard to find, the BC-700 is almost as good); using an old NiCad charger could be part of your troubles
