Shel, I have had a Sony boombox with CD player for years now that works great. The speakers are removeable and can be hung up in the corners out of the way. I don't have the model number handy and they may not make it anymore but I'm sure they make something similar today.
Also, I have heard good things about the Bose Wave radio. They have a model with a CD player, as well. This one may not take up as much room as a boombox or micro-stereo unit and I hear the radio sounds excellent on these units.
