Drobos sound convenient, but i am put off by the very mixed reviews they
get: low performance relative to true RAID units (even the S), loud fans,
cheap construction, some reports of unrecoverable failures
I've been running a 4 slot Drobo for the better part of 2 years. It seems to
do what it is designed to do.
Mine is a USB, so yes, it is on the slow side, but that was the technology
that I bought and I knew what it would be going in.
I don't know about cheap construction, mine seems well built and solid. The
fan is a bit noisy, some units are apparently noisier than others.
The only problem I've heard of with them that is of concern is that because
of the way they work, if you install a new drive to replace a failed on and
another drive fails during the time it takes for the unit to rewrite the
data, you have lost the contents of the unit.
I don't know if this is true or not.
I don't keep my Drobo running all the time, I fire it up when I am
transfering image files over from a card to my onboard RAID, and I do a
backup at that time, both of what I am taking off the card and also any data
that is on my mirror.
To me, the Drobo gives a reasonably secure storage method for people who
don't want to be pocket protector types.
