I've found that with > 80,000 photos in my lightroom catalogue, it's

Yes, you just have to open the other catalogue. The only problem is that it takes a few moments.

It is important to have the catalogues on a disk that the computer can access quickly. It would be tempting to put them on a solid state drive, because that seems to be the biggest performance bottleneck.
