I do not import direct from camera or card to LR. I also have
directories set up for Nikon, Pentax and Canon(my g3 IR P&S) and copy
my camera files/folder to which ever camera i am shooting, and use sub
folders such as 11-10-10-jays in back yard.

Those photos are copied to the folder, then i open LR and import that
directory. Seems to work well, and no lost files, so far.
