As to the DA* 50-135mm f2.8, well, it's a gem. Absolutely love it.
I heard back from the camera shop, they sold that one just before closing
time yesterday :(
They've offered to honour the price on the 16-45 for me so I'll try and
sneak a long lunch break tomorrow to check it out.
One thing to remember: the 16-45 is not weather sealed. I don't know if
that's a deal breaker for ya, though. Today I shot in the snow with the
50-135--kit came home soaked; I wouldn't be able to do that with the 16-45
