I don't think that cloning out a single blob is excessive editing. That's just 
part of the rendering process. It's no more excessive than a crop IMO. This is 
the digital age, and digital tools are and should be used to enhance a 
photograph. Ansel Adams used extensive and complex procedures in his darkroom 
to achieve the look he wanted. A look that often didn't match the subject in 
every way. You should be able to use the tools at your disposal. I would guess 
that at least 30% of the photos in the Petnax Gallery have been digitally 
modified in some minor way. I've seen evidence of bad cloning work in some 
images.
