Depends on the object and what it's on top of. I've cloned out EXIT signs in on-stage shots where the sign was on a dark background. The Spot Removal brush lets you choose Clone or Heal and you have to experiment to see which will work better in each situation. You can also choose how hard the edge of the cloning circle is, so you clone into tight areas without it picking up stray light areas and causing crazy smears. You also have to experiment with the placement of the source circle. Eg: don't let it get too close to the edge of the frame. BTW, you can set your source circle to be something that is outside your cropping area. You have to remove your crop to adjust it later, but it works and can be very useful.
It's something of a black art, but after a while you will get quite handy with that tool.
I have on occasion gone way overboard and Spot Removed a large irregular object by creating a cluster of little overlapping cloning and healing circles. The things I'll do to avoid firing up Photoshop now! :-)
