Darren, this is a tricky question. So here is my tricky answer.

1. Most importantly, I almost always shoot hand-held, which immediately implies that I don't extract all the sharpness there is from my lenses.

2. I've all three FA limited lenses that are pretty sharp. I think that FA31 is the sharpest wide open and FA43 is the sharpest closed down a bit. FA 77 is also very sharp, but in a pleasing, not bleeding way.

3. Some of the shots that I made with A 50/1.2 wide open were surprisingly sharp for my taste. Closed down it is also very sharp.

4. Sigma 24-60/2.8 is soft-ish wide open but from f/3.5 on it can be bitingly sharp - like in - you can count separate hairs on the eye brows of my girls from their portraits.

5. DA 21 ain't too impressive wide open, but close it a stop or two and it is pretty sharp. It is Galia's lens now, by the way.

6. Our most resent buy - D FA 50/2.8 is very sharp too and the sharpness is uniform across the frame. Galia uses it with great success.

7. My copy of FA 50/1.4 is also very sharp. It is so sharp that its previous owner was somewhat reluctant to part with it.

So, to summarize - when choosing a lens for a shoot or for a walk or even for travel I don't concern myself with sharpness. I would suggest a similar approach.

Boris
