dunno about the usage of the word friends in English but when I call someone a friend I do so with a sense of pride and obligation. I never liked facebook's use of the word for that very reason, AOL used buddy which I liked a lot better (not to say I liked or even used AOL)
My whole objection to Fakebook is because it was introduced to me as a marketing tool. I sat through two days of seminars on how to get around their restriction on using it as a business. The whole point of the "friend" request is to prey on teenagers; beat 'em up and steal their lunch money.
