Google has been somewhat ruthless in mining information for
advertising purposes. They've been called on the carpet a number of
times. The difference between Facebook and Google is probably a
matter of splitting hairs. While hundreds of millions around the
globe use Facebook, I haven't heard of anyone suffering any real harm
at their hands. Yeah, plenty of whining from time to time, but
nothing concrete that I'm aware of.
