It sounds like your lenses are all pre-"A" lenses, so you will need to turn the top dial to M to use them. If you get older Pentax-A lenses (or other third party lenses with the "A" setting) you can select the "A" and also use AV mode on your top dial (selecting your desired aperture with the camera body wheel.
