Is the iPad a useful tool for photo editing.??

useful, yes; end-all, no; there are dozens of tools for the basics: cropping, rotation, exposure adjustment, filtering, even simple retouching; Adobe has released Photoshop for iPad; the free version (Photoshop Express) may be worth a try but i would look at several other tools before buying the $10 version; of apps dedicated to photo editing i've tried with on my iPhone, i liked Photogene2 best, but that's not a solid recommendation; for organizing photos options are more limited — iPhoto for iPad was just released and we'll try it on my partner's iPad soon; i expect it will meet all her basic needs and then some

of note, i've heard Avid Studio is a blast for editing video on the iPad

I don't see any USB ports, if you have photos etc stored i assume you
need to use your airport to transfer to a home computer.?

either; the Camera Connection Kit adds a USB port and SD slot; over wifi you can use certain tools to manage things manually (e.g. via Dropbox); if you have an EyeFi card, there's an app to suck your images directly onto an iPad; or you can automatically sync photos with iCloud — some people really like that feature

Is it better just to find a new battery for my iBook.??

depends what you need to do; an iBook is more flexible at the basic level, but iBooks are old enough that there's a good chance the new iPad is more powerful; it certainly has a much better display (haven't see one yet, but credible people are saying it's the best display they've ever seen, period); an iPad is also much more portable

add a Bluetooth keyboard and an iPad can replace computers for some people; aside from photos it does very well as a writing tool (email, notes, even some kinds of long documents); it excels at media consumption (music & video, as well as _viewing_ photos); and it meets most people's needs for web browsing (though as a voracious web researcher, it holds me back)

Is there really a restaurant at the end of the universe.??

there will be by the time you get there
