A tablet device is sometimes a useful adjunct to a laptop but it's never a replacement for one so you'd have to get the new battery for your laptop anyway.
for most people who know their way around a computer, a tablet is still too limiting, but there are many for whom it's entirely sufficient; for example i have an older family member who uses an early-style iMac for email and web, and the tube is starting to fail; i'm confident when it dies that an iPad will completely replace that computer
