The new iPad still falls short of my wish-listed portable photo-procesing
gadget, but I have preordered one of the new iPads anyway.
Limitations:
-limited memory (max 64gb)
-no provision for adding external drive (though I understand that there
are workarounds out there)
-minimal integration of any photo apps other than for Apple's iPhoto.
But, on the plus side:
-killer display for showing off your portfolio or displaying results to
photo subjects. (The kids in the Costa Rican village I visit occasionally love
seeing their image on the LCD screen on the back of the camera; they are going
to be ecstatic when they see themselves on the "large" high resolution iPad
screen.)
- Photosmith app (http://www.photosmithapp.com/) which appears to
provide capability to do some LR work in the field (e.g., keywording, rating,
maybe some actual color adjustments etc.) and then synch that to your real
computer once back home.
-it is a lot easier to use than a laptop for reading an eBook in bed,
for doing a quick web search, for reading email while stretched out on the
couch watching the curling matches . . .
My wife has made heavy use of her's, in lieu of her iBook or iPhone, for
reading books, playing solitare, checking eMail, as a GPS when we are
traveling, etc. On our way to Kansas City earlier this year, as we crossed the
desolate stretch between Springfield IL and Hannibal MO she got an eMail with
an attachment - scanned sheet music for the piece the choir was doing in church
that Sunday. So she found and downloaded a Piano app and used the iPad to
accompany her as she practiced the tune. Can't do that with your phone or your
laptop! [I know I can be proven wrong on both counts, but let me be a bit
hyperbolic for now . . .]
My biggest issue is the memory. For most of what I have described above, the
minimal 16gb would be just fine. The price you pay to move to 32g or 64g is
quite steep, and that memory seems of value only if there is a worthwhile photo
processing utility. I avoided the iPad and the iPad2, and I would also have
passed on the new iPad if it hadn't been for the Photosmith app.
