Having cameras where people can buy them is a necessary, but not sufficient, 
condition for selling them.  When it is hard for people who know about a camera 
to find one, that makes it almost impossible to sell one to someone that didn't 
already know about it.  It just so happens that our local brick and mortar 
camera store does carry Pentax, and I just happened to overhear the salesman 
talking to someone about one when I was looking for my first DSLR.

There is a lot that Pentax could do to make people aware that they exist.  It 
would be interesting to see how many of Tom's students end up buying Pentax for 
their first DSLR.
