A number of years ago I ask a camera store owner why he didn't stock Pentax. He explained (?) that Pentax wouldn't let him pick and choose just those items he wanted to stock, but instead dictated to him what he would be required to stock. Stated he featured Canon, carried a few Nikons and Olympus. The thing he didn't do was "bad mouth" Pentax, but instead said he considered their lenses (referred to them as "Tacks") as being "excellent.". Claimed his first SLR was a Pentax.

Pentax is still largely a niche product. It's probably volume constrained in production. The big-box stores and discounters go for brands that can be supplied in huge volume, all the time. A Pentax is still somewhat unique. It's not for everyman. I like it that way.
