I doubt it was built in, as I believe it was left on the moon as excess
weight.

It simply amazes me that 1) the original video tapes were lost and 2)
Buzz Aldrin did not take the camera and get an image of Neil Armstrong
on the lunar surface. All the still image photography was done by Neil
Armstrong of Buzz Aldrin.
I believe the camera (a specially-modified Hasselblad) was mounted to
the front of the space suit, so swapping it from one astronaut to
another would be no simple trick.
