My shutter finger is sending morris code on the shutter release. I use a 5
sensor Auto select setting for sitting birds, being ready for when they launch.
I often see the area focus sensors blink indicating focus on an unwanted branch
or twig and so am continually re,  re,, verifying focus. May have something to
do with the lock up.(?)

Going  back to your original post... what are you doing to check
focus?  I've had cameras lock up on me after several rounds of
continuous shooting.. at a track meet, say... where I am shooting a
lot, and trying to check the previews before everything is done being
written to the card...  I'm impatient, I guess...  But, the camera
will freeze, and I won't be able to do anything until it either
catches up, or I shut it off & on again.  Which is risky & unpleasant,
but... see "impatient", above...
