In comparing the APS-C K20D and FF LX Viewfinders, Rob & PJ, you
forget that the LX view finder is obviously almost 1.5 times brighter,
being a FF camera and hence much brighter and larger. Then you mention
"LX with a good screen", which again with its micro prism and split
screen allowed you to fine tune the focus since the images were so
bright and big.
So these advantages combined with the mediocre circa 1970s metering
system allowed you to capture pretty decent photos.
However the current metering chips are much smarter and allows you
more choices. So if you master Spot Metering say on a Pentax DSLR you
WILL get 92% of your photos just perfect.

PS: even as electronics get better and better every (6) months, folks
will still be whining about their gear (20) years later.

Think of what you could get if you could combine "current metering chips" with the viewfinder from an "LX with a good screen".
