Honestly Larry, Bill, Bruce, David & Paul, I did not have fast paced
action in mind when I referred to the center focus point and
recomposing technique. Here is what I did for fast paced action:-
On a sailing ship recently, the Santa Maria, in Goa, there were some
entertainment on the top deck - mostly Portuguese - Goan dance forms.
So I used TAv mode on the K-5 and the 18-135 WR, with a decently high
shutter speed, fully open aperture, center focus point, and fired away
in burst mode .I relied on the high ISO magic of the K-5.
I had no time to use the
4-way controller to shift the focus point around in a fast paced
Hispanic like dance.
I got some pretty good shots. Of course not all the dance troupe were
in focus, especially if they made a big circle. But some motion blur
and slight un-sharpness of the rear dancers, but with the dancers in
the front facing the camera pretty sharp, added to the photos charm.
So how do you manage to switch focus point with the 4-way controller
when the dancers are moving about pretty fast?
Generally, I'm not switching points all that often, I'm just using one
of the focus points that matches my compositional needs. For example,
when shooting portraits where I want to focus on the subject's near eye,
I choose the upper left or right point of the 9 point grid, depending on
which way the model is facing, and set that point on the eye that I want
to focus on.
Generally if I am shooting landscape or static subjects, I'm in
relatively good light, want deeper DOF, and don't worry over much about
the AF, since at f/8 ot f/11, any focus errors are covered, and as long
as there isn't a glaring AF error, it's all good.

PS: after the Boston serial bombing, we had a very bad case of
terrorist bombing today in Bangalore where I live.
I feel blessed that none of the really bad people really seem to care
about where I live. I couldn't imagine living someplace where you have
to worry about being blown up every waking moment.
