Larry's been talking up the 85/1.4 to me off-list for a little while as
an alternative to the pricey 77/1.8 (my holy grail lens). It certainly
looks like a viable alternative, but I'm not sure if it has aperture
control contacts -- something I really would like to have if I'm gong to
use it in the way I plan to use it. Apparently, the older copies lack
the contacts, but newer builds may have them. Is there anyone on the
list who can confirm whether or not that's the case? Manual focus isn't
an issue for me, but I really need aperture control to avoid the extra
step of stopping down with the green button in taking quick shots of
people in unguarded moments.
I had a small windfall last night in a weekly drawing at the club where
I work which would allow me to get the lens -- which is obviously much
more affordable than the 77/1.8 is. Alternatively, I could sock the
money away and continue saving until I can afford the Real McCoy.
Anybody have any guidance to offer -- or know where I can get a
crazy-good deal on the 77/1.8?
Thanks!

Get the real thing. It is made of awesome and fairy dust.
Thanks, Doug. I'm leaning heavily in that direction, but I'm just about
as mercurial as it gets.
It really is a wonderful lens that summons god rays and an angelic
chorus with every shutter click, isn't it?
