Larry's been talking up the 85/1.4 to me off-list for a little while as
an alternative to the pricey 77/1.8 (my holy grail lens). It certainly
looks like a viable alternative, but I'm not sure if it has aperture
control contacts -- something I really would like to have if I'm gong to
use it in the way I plan to use it. Apparently, the older copies lack
the contacts, but newer builds may have them. Is there anyone on the
list who can confirm whether or not that's the case?
I assume you're talking about either the A*85/1.4 or its later FA incarnation?
Here's some help:

Of course the A*85/1.4 is the only choice to make and then you must tape
down the aperture ring at f/1.4 and only ever use it at that setting!!!
It is sacrilege to do otherwise and the fleas of a thousand camels will
infest your armpits.

Beautiful shots, Cotty!
Unfortunately, after seeing what the A*85/1.4 sells for, I'm legally
prohibited from even considering it.
