You're absolutely right, Larry. It was a lead-balloon experiment. I'm
going to pick up sync cords and wireless triggers next week, and maybe
see if I can pick up a reasonably priced slave.
Nevertheless, I'm starting to get the hang of manual flash and that's a
minor miracle in and of itself.

You will probably have the best luck, right off the bat,
using all of the strobes in manual mode. This means you
cannot trigger off the pop-up flash because Pentax can't
understand why anyone would want to make any flash exposure
decisions for themselves, or even worse, remotely trigger
any flash that wasn't made with Pentax to use their wireless
sync protocol.
If you don't want the dumb strobe on the camera to illuminate
the scene when it triggers the external strobes, put an IR filter
in front of it:

Ignore the last question. I just read (in some online literature
that didn't come with the unit) that it operates on the light from
the master flash, which I figure is good. I'm going to give it a
whirl with some confiscated toys and see what comes of it.

Actually the AF 200T has a built in sensor, which can be used in
either "red" or "green" mode to give pretty good automatic results
even with the K20D so I expect that it will work just as well with
the K-5. In fact the the flash recognizes the K20D in it's Green
and P modes to set the suggested shutter speed and aperture,
(including normal exposure biasing), it doesn't support any of the
more advanced flash modes from the quick menu, but the fact that
it does any of that at all is a plus. The AF 200S however
supports TTL automatic only IIRC, so you can only use it as a
manual flash.
Pentax's P-TTL implementation on the K20D used to give such
inconsistent results that Bill Robb seemed to have a daily rant
about it a few years ago which stopped me from buying a more
advanced flash than the AF 280T which works pretty much as the AF
200T does.

Well, crap. ;)
On the plus-side, when I finally learn manual flash well enough
to get consistent and reasonably predictable results, I'll be
set!

Sorry, Walt, these are strictly useful now as fully manual. They
support TTL, but your cameras don't. And they don't have any slave
functions at all.
To use these wirelessly you need to get some cheap wireless triggers,
like the Cowboy Studios NPT-04's ($20 for Tx/Rx).

Thanks, Bruce.
Do you suppose they'd be good as slaves when used with
optical triggers?

The AF200T is a pretty good fully manual flash for lower
power uses. I
just bought one for $30 to fit inside my small 18" softbox. The only
problem, besides having a low GN is erratic recharge
times. The AF200S
is similar but less useful as its power setting is less adjustable.
