Sigma makes a 24/1.8, available for $550.  
I have the 20/1.8 which alternates between being totally frustrating, 
and a great piece of glass when the photo I'm trying to take is within
it's competency range.

I bought my 8mm as a toy, was very pleasantly surprised by the build
quality, and have been even more surprised at how often I grab it for
serious photos.
