Not having a K-3 I could be wrong in this but I don't think K-3 DNGs can
be opened in older versions of Photoshop.  Running them through the DNG
converter and selecting the right compatibility mode for Camera Raw,
should enable them to open in older Photoshops.  They end up much
larger, though.


Sorry, Brian, you are wrong. Pentax DNG files can be opened by any version of Photoshop that has a raw converter. For fun, I fired up my 11 year old laptop a while back to test this out. It has Photoshop 7 on it (pre CS), which was the first version to have a raw converter available. The poor thing gagged on the size of the KS files, but eventually opened them. It took a very long time. This is the laptop I purchased when I bought the istD because it was cheaper to buy it than the 4 1gb cards I thought I would need (at that time a 1gb card was about $400.00).

There is no advantage to running Pentax DNGs through the DNG converter. I really don't understand why anyone would even consider this to be a good idea.
