Charles,
To me, your question was valid, and not confrontational at all.
But on the other hand, I am a scientist, and I know some people find my way
of asking questions - confrontational.
Someone has noted that it is a reason why many scientists have problems in
personal or social interaction: the way scientists ask questions, make
comments, or argue about things is taken as personal attacks by some
non-scientists. (While those would be considered as healthy discussions by
scientists.)

You say ....many scientists have problems in personal or social interaction..
Really? Do you have any data to back that up? If you are going to make comments
like that you should be specific e.g., in lieu of "many" you need to say
"53% of self-proclaimed `scientists' were judged to be `weirdoes' by their
closest friends..." ;-).

research scientist.]
Stan, I rest my case! ;-)
