To me, your question was valid, and not confrontational at all.
But on the other hand, I am a scientist, and I know some people find my way of asking questions - confrontational.

Someone has noted that it is a reason why many scientists have problems in personal or social interaction: the way scientists ask questions, make comments, or argue about things is taken as personal attacks by some non-scientists. (While those would be considered as healthy discussions by scientists.)
