Christine as you know I had lower back problems about 10 years ago and had treatment from a chiropractor at the time and then ongoing for a year and then maintenance visits every 3 months or so.
My problem is I have one desiccated disk (it is flatter than the others and doesn't 're-inflate' at night when asleep as disks do. Hence the strain was on the back muscles to take extra responsibility and my pain was muscle spasms. In treating, the mantra is 'cold for injury and heat for repair'. The application of cold every 10 mins allows blood to be introduced more readily to the injury site and so effect repair better - as it's the blood that carries the nutrients to the cells that need repair, especially in muscle injury cases like mine. Another therapy is massage - I regularly use a mechanical back massager ( A 'thumper' - see link below) and this is also brilliant at promoting blood flow to the area. I use it several times a week as maintenance. Other than that I would seriously recommend a chiro visit because if there is an underlying issue (as indeed there was for me) then they will find it and treat accordingly. Meanwhile get well soon. Incidentally I once had acupuncture for fast pain relief - and guess what it is amazing. I am very skeptical when it comes to things like this and was wary of it but conceded and had acupuncture for pain relief during a hideous bout (before I saw a chiro) and I couldn't believe the difference. I was bed-bound, unable even to stand, and within 30 minutes I was walking up and down stairs. It was astonishing. BUT - pain relief is merely masking the suffering - as does ibuprofen etc - the real causes of the injury must be treated and rectified to avoid substantial problems further down the road.
