Eric,

In the Develop module, look at the triangles in the upper corners of the 
histogram.

If they’re white, the colors you mention show up in the under- or over- exposed 
areas of the image.

If you click on them they turn black, and the blue and red areas disappear.

I find the underexposure indicator helpful in setting the black point, 
personally. My experience is that the overexposure indicator can be turned on, 
the image not showing any red, but still with enough overexposure to blot out 
any detail or contrast.
