I’ve been pretty cautious about going out, about being in contact with others.
But today the governor of our state issued a strong Stay At Home order
effective through April 13. Still ok to go out for food and meds but otherwise
Stay Home.

We don't have any confinement. Christian democrat minister-president
Armin Laschet of North Rhine-Westphalia thinks there can't be any
further restrictions given that religious freedom is already restricted
since people can't attend mass. The guy used to be chief editor of the
episcopal newsletter in the town of Aachen and methinks he'd better
stayed there. To make things worse, he's thrown his hat into the ring to
become Merkel's successor.

Instead there's a ban on being together outside in groups of more than
two people who are not part of the same family or living under the same
roof. All others have to keep their distance.

All bars, pubs, restaurants (unless for take-away) and shops with the
exception of supermarkets, pharmacies, drugstores and DIY stores are
closed. The latter supposedly in order to keep people occupied while
they're staying at home. All schools and public places like museums,
sports grounds etc. are closed as well.

As a result, Cologne city centre is as calm as on Xmas day. No car
traffic, no noise, no exhaust fumes, no smells from the ventilation of
the numerous restaurant kitchens around us. No more stink from the curry
house behind our back yard when they let their bread scorch in the oven
yet again. Great if it weren't for the gruesome circumstances.

I haven't been out of the house for a week and a half and frankly I'm
not missing much except our weekly day of shopping and tourism in
Belgium on Fridays and of course our Easter holiday in Dunkirk, even
more so since we hadn't been able to go there over Xmas.

Other than that, we're fine. Let's hope all this will be over in the
foreseeable future.
