I don't like kludges, either, and you're right. Kludges have a habit of failing just when you're not able to rebuild the kludge. For the youngsters in the audience, kludge sounds like "klooj" or "klooge". Kludges are OK for a "quick and dirty" temporary fix but not for long term, permanent use.
I have two Nikon FTN finders that call for two adapters each. No voltage adjustments are needed and the adapters fit perfectly. S76 batteries last a long time, are cheap, and are easily found. I handed down my old Spotmatic to my son. He uses the adapter, as well. No problems.
