Brad;

I usually carry a heavy Bogen tripod with a massive (3lb) StudioBall head.
Mounted on that via QR plate would be a Sigma 300/4 APO lens and attached to
that would be the LX with winder.

I carry the whole rig over my shoulder because the few minutes it takes to
set up by pulling the camera out of the bag, etc, is a lost shot. I hiked
the Grand Canyon with this set up (although back then I had a smaller Bogen
ball-head).

Risky? Sure. But I'm a big boy and will take the risk. I trust the QR
plates, the lens mount, and all the other bits that my cause the camera to
tumble. I also trust my ability to not swing the camera and lens into rocks,
trees, or other people.

By the way, If I recall lots of nature photographers carry their rigs this
way and also may even reccomend it in their books. (must do some reading
when I get home...). I've also seen MANY sports photographers balancing
their Giant-Lens-mounted mono-pods over their shoulders as they run from one
side of the field/track/court/whatever to the other.

One other thing, the main reason why I rarely have straps on my cameras is
that they could potentially cause a serious problem with tree branches....
