   You can try to focus the A 50/1.2 stop down to 2.8 and see if the
   apparent sharpness gain improves the ease of focusing.

   Anyway I just tried that with the FA 50/1.4 and I really can't see
   any difference, as I can't visually detect any change in sharpness
   between f/1.4 and f/4 - where the lens almost tops in sharpness
   without blackening the viewfinder.
   
   Yet I might have an explanation if you, like Tom, tend to focus
   on catch lights or other bright spots. The comma aberration for
   A 50/1.2 is huge at 1.2 compared to A 50/2.8 and significantly
   distorts the bright spots even at one third of the frame. Hence
   even if in focus, such small highlights don't appear as properly
   focused.
