etc. In this case I'm on my own. I notice that part of the
agreement I just signed says: "The Contractor will carry liability
insurance". So, where does one find this kind of software engineering
liability insurance? Would it suffice to have an umbrella policy?
That's new to me. One attorney told me I would be best advised to have a
LLC instead of a sole-proprietorship to have some kind of default
liability avoidance, but this opinion hasn't been repeated by others
with accounting-fu.
As far as taxes go, I assume you've got to send them in quarterly and
also pay a big chunk (15%) for SS, right?
Right. You will need to fill out a new schedule to attach to your 1040
that will suck between 5 and 15% off your SE income.
Also, what kinds of tools do people usually use to track their time?
I used to do this like Jeremy (vim), but it was painfully unreliable and
often error prone. I developed a (very) small perl app that I use now,
called "tim":

There is plenty of software out there to do "invoicing etc.", but I
found it all to be way-overcomplex for my needs. tim is nice and simple,
and it even has some provisions for automatic invoice generation (using
LaTeX). If you are actually considering using tim, poke me so I can
prepare a new release (CVS head is more betterer than what is on the
intarweb).
Good Luck.
