That doesn't sound so bad. The US "middle class" is quite capable of taking
care of its interests. It is politically powerful, and by historical and
global standards very, very well-off and can absorb some modest tax
increases.

It is the poor who are utterly powerless and it is likely they, not the
"middle class" who will likely be targeted.(Medicaid, food stamps,
unemployment insurance, welfare, etc).
