This notion of a C gem being re-painted and turned into a D is not going to fly.

 never owned any Gems I really appreciate your post as it answered my question, 
I wondered if the C and D had a different casting but did not think to ask that 
question directly.  The only question that remains, was it possible that a D 
was painted black by mistake and then repainted.
